Live It Up! 10 Ways to Boost Your Mood Instantly.

Took this when I was in Fort Lauderdale last week.

We’ve all had one of those days where nothing seems to be going right. Whether you’re fighting with a significant other, or things are running amok at work, or maybe you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Whatever the reason is, I’ve created a list of instant mood boosters:

1. SCREAM- I think people really take for granted the power of screaming. Now I don’t mean scream at someone. I’m referring to when you’re alone and feeling overwhelmed. Scream into a pillow in your room, or scream when you’re in the car driving home from work after an intense day in the office. You will be surprised at how much better you feel after letting out all your angst vocally.

2. Google Inspiring Quotes- One of my favorite things to do when I’m down is to look up inspiring quotes online. I normally stumble across a quote that is exactly what I need to hear at that moment.

3. Have a Healthy Snack- Most of us tend to want some form of comfort food when we’re feeling down. The problem is, normally the comfort food you’re craving is something unhealthy. I know every time I give into the urge of having McDonalds when I’m stressed, although its amazing while I’m eating it I always feel super guilty after causing me to feel worse than when I started. Try having a snack that’ll make you feel inspired because you didn’t give into those fast food temptations.

4. Have a Little Retail Therapy- Now let’s be clear, I’m not saying go out and break the bank every time you get upset. What I am saying is small amounts of retail therapy work. Key word being small. Go out and buy that lipgloss shade you’ve been dying to try or that bright bottle of nail polish you saw in the store last week!

5. Smile!- I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “Fake it til’ you make it”? Well that goes with feeling better too. Research shows that just forcing yourself to smile can put you in a better mood!

6. Listen to Your Favorite Comedian- I recently discovered I could listen to my favorite comedians all the time on Pandora. Not only do they play the comedians I love, they also play new comedians who are just as great. Laughter is truly the best medicine when you are down!

7. Break a Sweat- Another great way to boost your mood is by getting a good workout in. Working out causes your body to produce more endorphins, instantly boosting your mood.

8. Grab the Bottle and Pour Yourself a Drink- I think this one is pretty self explanatory. I’m not saying go out and get wasted (that’s actually counterproductive because too much alcohol is a depressant), I’m saying have a glass of wine and take the edge off. Relax!

9. Look Cute- I once read a quote that said “When all else fails, look cute”. I know it sounds really superficial, but it’s hard to be in a bad mood when you’re feeling confident and loving the outfit you’re wearing!

10. Take a Nap- Sometimes the best way to boost your mood, is to rest. I’m the biggest advocate of the cat nap. You will be surprised what 20 minutes of sleep will do!!

I hope this helps you when you are feeling down. Are there any others that you would add to the list?

Enjoy Your Week!!!!

  1. Scratch #8. Only drink when you’re happy. Drinking to GET happy will lead to alcoholism every time. Use one of the other excellent methods here first. Once you’re feeling great, enjoy yourself!

It’s true smiling makes you happier. If only we all knew just how in control of our emotions we can actually be.

    • Hey! I totally hear what your saying. I’m not saying drink to get happy, I’m saying having a glass of wine can have a calming effect. Alcohol isn’t for everyone, this is just a list of things I know have worked for me at times.

      • Steve! That’s crazy you mention meditation! I read an article on the benefits of meditation this morning! I want to try it, but I’m not sure I’m able to sit still long enough to do it! Any tips?

      • Do it! You CAN sit still if you make it your focus. Start by holding the body still – it’s easier than holding the mind still, which is where true meditation begins. At all times, focusing on your breathing will help focus and still your mind and body.

  2. I´d say cuddle and play with your pet. 🙂 “Spooning” with my cat on the couch always puts a smile on my face. And I love looking at beautiful art, or a walk through a public park or botanical garden with lots of colorful flowers. Bright colors are good for you when you are in a bad mood.

  3. I like digging in the dirt if I am just mopey for some reason. If I have been frustrated, angry, or upset in a strong way, I throw on some music, get out the big yellow gloves, and deep clean something. By the time that I am done, I have a clean house (always something that brightens my mood) and I have worked the edge off, so I don’t feel so.. I guess the best way to explain it is jittery. When I am feeling any strong emotion I have to be up and moving.

Another thing is scent. Feeling out of sorts? There are two ways to go about it that work for me. I either find a scent I love (like lilac) which lifts my mood because it is a favorite, or find a scent that has been researched to improve mood. A quick google search will give you a huge list of scents to try.

Or you can pamper yourself. I have scented oils that I only get out when it is a special occasion. I will whip up an easy face scrub (honey, sugar, milk) and exfoliate while listening to some good music with low lighting. You can deep condition your hair, whatever makes you feel good. The key is to do it in a way that invigorates and relaxes you. It’ll brighten you right up.

You have great tips up there, I have to be careful with retail therapy, I can get myself into some real trouble with it. I literally have to only take the money I plan on spending and not a penny or card more to the store.

    • Retail therapy has gotten me in trouble too! Lol. I’ve read about the power of scent and I know nothing brightens my day more than the scent of fresh flowers! Thanks so much for coming by my blog.
