See the World. (Without Getting on a Plane)

Most of us love the idea of traveling, but don’t necessarily have the means or the time to make it work. Traveling is something I feel like I must do, but at this point in my life it isn’t financially feasible. Luckily, my boyfriend is brilliant and has introduced me to the beauty of Day Trips. Normally when I think of the type of traveling I want to do, I think of traveling internationally, but that mindset keeps me from traveling to such amazing gems that are in my own backyard. For example, he took me to a local museum last weekend. After living in New York City, I was extremely skeptical of what Jacksonville’s museum had to offer, but it turned out to be a great experience. I took this photo in their impressionist exhibition. They wanted us to be able to see how white light has a variety of colors in it.

The museum also had a collection of beautiful gardens.

Needless to say, I was shocked. It made me realize how sometimes the very beauty we seek has been there the whole time. This past Saturday, we took a day trip to Savannah. I fell in love with it, five minutes after we had arrived. The historic downtown area stole my heart.

SCAD was hosting an International Festival. While we walked around I was stopped and photographed by an AMAZING fashion blogger named Mangue Banzima. Here is the link to his fashion blog www.quistyle.com . Definitely check it out! Here is the photo of me that made it on to his blog. He and his family were so nice! It was great to connect randomly with a fellow blogger.

After lunch David and I went to the Social Club, for a drink and then headed home.

I’ve written all this to say, stop and look around you. Take a day trip and explore. It might not be the idea of traveling you had in mind, but you never know who you might meet or what beauty you might find:)

Happy Monday!

      • The Artist’s Way could just as easily be titled ‘the Art of Getting Unstuck’. It focuses on unlocking the creative power we have, rather than lamenting what we don’t. Really cool book. Great post!

    • I haven’t read it in years, but I remember that when I did, I was taking little artsy/adventure days to myself where I just spent time seeing all the stuff around me that was beautiful and fun. It IS a book about getting unstuck, unblocked, whatever you want to call it. She explained way better than me. Great book!

  1. I know what you mean about wanting to travel internationally and forgetting about what is in your backyard! My fiance and I wanted to take a backpacking trip through Canada for our honeymoon, but with money and lots of life changes happening we don’t think we’ll be able to go somewhere for a whole week. I think instead we’re going to take a bike tour on a long weekend!

  2. bornattwentyfive. This is brilliant. Cannot believe there is so much beuty around us while we spend years saving to go and look for it. The pictures are gorgeous and I visited your new friend’s website. Fantastic pictures of the SCAD festival. Thanks for sharing this!

  3. You are so right about traveling. I used to travel so much when I was younger and now it’s just not in the cards. I know there are tons of places near me that I could be exploring and your post reminded me of this!

  4. That’s great! Sounds like a fun experience. I have had the opportunity to live in a few places in the US and I am just finding out now that I need to enjoy what surrounds me. I wish I would have traveled more in the towns I had previously lived in.

  5. I absolutely LOVE your photos! I agree about travelling as much as you can no matter where it is. My family used to tease me because I had this little old Nissan Sentra when my kids were little and I would drive them EVERYWHERE…New England is beautiful and there is so much to see just in Massachusetts. we hardly ever stayed a weekend at home. We’ve done BIG roadtrips as well and still do but now I don’t have to do all the driving 🙂

    • Thank you! New England is gorgeous! I grew up outside of Philadelphia and my parents took us on a road trip to Mass. when I was little. I regret not making it a point to visit when I was living in NYC this past year. That’s great you’re instilling in your kids the desire to travel and see the world!

  6. Some of my favorite trips have been day trips – far enough away that you get a different flavor but close enough that you get to sleep in your own bed. Savanah sounds gorgeous – hope I can make it there someday!! Thanks for your visit to One January Day!

  7. Love this!! You can get free travel guides from different states and city of commerce websites. It helps to plan short trips. This is something I plan on starting soon too! Thank you so much for sharing!

  8. Just wanted to stop by and see what your blog is about, and I’m so glad I did! This post really resonated with me. Beautiful photos and true words, I had some friends visiting last month, and seeing the city through their eyes reminded me how much i miss the cool little details on a daily basis. Thanks for the reminder that there’s always something to explore in your own backyard!

    • Yes day trips are the best! I checked out the hillwood museum link you sent me and it looks epic! There’s a ton of awesome things to do in DC. That’s one thing I took for granted when I was living in nyc. I didn’t make the most of all the awesome things to do there. Or more like I did tons of awesome things but should have done a lot more while I was there. Do you make it into NYC much?

  9. Inspiring article. It is easy to have hope and dreams and to keep imagining how our lives could be but it is far more empowering to actually do the best with what we have already got. I really like the idea that beauty is all around us and it is just up to us to open our eyes and look at it. Thanks for sharing.

  10. thanks for you sweet comment on my blog. i need all of the encouragement i can get. this is a wonderful post! I actually work for a travel agency that sends people to see all of these fabulous places i can’t yet afford to go. your post was a nice reminder that you don’t have to go far to have an awesome vacation. it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. 🙂

    • I’m glad you liked my post. It’s so important to take in what’s around you! That’s cool you work for a travel agency! Hopefully they’ll give you a discount on some of those trips that way you can experience seeing the world! Until then I’m sure you have awesome places right by you to visit. If you take a day trip sometime soon let me know! I love hear about various adventures.

I really liked your blog. Something about revamping something is always excited! I can’t wait to see what you come up with:)

  11. Beautiful. I take mini vacations around my city (Austin) once a week. I call them Observation Days. I pick a different part of town, a different time of day, and I walk, listen, and otherwise observe. I found a park and sculpture garden one day – had no idea it was there in the Busy Mondays Through Fridays of Driving Through Places.
